Researchers funded by 21 agencies will soon follow a single set of rules for sharing the data behind their publications, under an agreement announced this week. The policy requires data to be deposited in recognized repositories no later than the date of publication, with exceptions for sensitive information.
Funders say the harmonized approach will reduce administrative burden for scientists who hold grants from several agencies. Some researchers welcomed the move but warned that repositories and data stewards will need sustained support.
The policy will take effect for new grants from January, with a two-year transition for existing projects.
