Your recent coverage of climate impacts on ecosystems relied heavily on data from long-running field stations. Many of these sites operate on short-term grants and volunteer effort, and several have closed in the past decade.
We urge funders to treat field stations as infrastructure, with stable core funding comparable to that of telescopes or particle accelerators. The scientific return on decades of continuous observation is immense, and once a record is broken it cannot be restored.
