Many new principal investigators accept the first offer they receive, unaware that start-up packages are often negotiable. Yet the resources agreed at this stage—equipment, staff, space and protected time—can shape a career for years.
Prepare a realistic budget for your first three to five years, prioritized by need. Talk to recently hired colleagues about what is typical. Ask about shared facilities, teaching loads and support for parental leave as well as money.
Negotiation is expected, and polite persistence is rarely held against candidates. Get the final agreement in writing.
